Part Five
Sophie hurried through the quad, which was occupied now by students with late-night nicotine cravings, and retreated inside her dormitory building. She turned the key to her room as gently as she could, knowing there was a possibility her roommate could be sleeping. Upon entering the room, she pulled off her sweater, grabbed her toothbrush and paste and scurried down the hall to the deserted girls bathroom.
She set her things down at the sink and inspected her reflection in the mirror. A flushed, freckled face stared back at her, eyes accusing. As she looked downward, she noticed several marks that had not been there before. Sophie raised her chin to get a better look at the three spots that decorated her neck.
Shit! she hung her head, gripping the sides of the sink with tense hands. She threw a flustered glance towards her cell phone, thinking briefly to call the culprit. What can he do but make it worse? she sighed, defeated.
Taking a tool in each hand, she smeared toothpaste on her brush and ran it furiously through her mouth. The ferocity was a fruitless effort to scrub away what shed done that night. She spit harshly into the sink and watched some blood trickle down the drain. With a pleading look, she touched her fingers to her neck, testing the reality of her situation.
Come morning, she thought, everyone will know.

You don't see what you possess, a beauty calm and clear
It floods the sky and blurs the darkness like a chandelier
All the light that you possess is skewed by lakes and seas
The shattered surface, so imperfect, is all that you believe
